Clinton knows that Oakland is a beautiful city filled with hope and promise, and it also faces serious problems in public safety, lack of new business, lack of job opportunities and the quality schools our children deserve.

Clinton will bring his energy, hard work and experience to tackle Oakland’s major issues. He has a strong understanding of how Oakland's issues are connected. By attracting new businesses to our neighborhoods, we infuse life into these communities, building stronger neighborhoods, increasing jobs, lowering crime, and improving the quality of life. Creating more jobs reduces crime, increases revenue for badly needed public services, improves our neighborhoods, and funds schools for our children.  Our troubled youth will be able to find better jobs and turn away from crime. These are key factors in improving the quality of life for everyone in Oakland.

Safety in Our Homes
Clinton’s fist priority is to ensure that Oakland’s citizens are safe in their homes and businesses. He understands that it is necessary to increase the number of police officers in our city, and that Police alone are not the solution to our crime problem. Crime solutions must include security, prevention, suppression, alternatives and rehabilitation. Clinton will fight for the city to explore alternate crime prevention methods, garner resources of the state and federal government, find alternatives through jobs, education, and training and create alternatives for those returning back to our society.

Improve Neighborhood Retail and Resources
Clinton wants to ensure that every neighborhood has basic community services such as, grocery and drug stores and other retail stores. Each neighborhood needs to feel lik a community, with basic city services within each neighborhood to improve the quality of life for those citizens. Our parks must be maintained, our street swept, and good quality recreational facilities available to our children. Clinton will work to rebuild our neighborhoods with more housing close to transit systems and our main arteries to restore the vibrancy of our neighborhoods that make Oakland a unique place to live.

More Jobs and Economic Development
Clinton fully understands that Oakland needs more jobs in our city. Clinton will actively recruit jobs producing smart growth businesses to come to Oakland. He understands that more jobs will benefit our neighbors, increase tax revenue, and provide basic services for all. He will work hard to rebuild Oakland’s economic base throughout the city. He understands that more jobs stabilizes neighborhoods, diversifies housing, expands revenue base, and improves our quality of life.

Building a Foundation for Our Children
One of Clinton’s highest priorities is rescuing our education system from its vicious downward cycle. He will fight to change state control of Oakland schools to restore the ability of parents, teachers and students to have meaningful input on critical issues such as academic progress, school closure and curriculum.

As a leader in the Oakland Chamber of Commerce and the Northern California Stanford Black Alumni Association, Clinton wants to build partnerships between the state and the business and philanthropic communities to help fund secondary education.

Democrat Clinton Killian credits his mother for his work ethic and deep respect for the power of education. For years she worked 96 hours each week in three jobs to provide her children a good home and a great education. That’s one of the reasons why it is so important for Clinton Killian to ensure that all of our children have access to excellent schools.

Building Affordable Housing for Our Families
As a member and former Chair of the Oakland Planning Commission, Clinton has fought to make housing affordable for first-time homebuyers and to attract new residents from all over the Bay Area who cannot afford a home in other cities. Clinton will work to modify state law to encourage infill housing development close to existing transit systems and direct new housing efforts to urban areas.
